Most visitors to Ethiopia can obtain an e-Visa in minutes. Here's everything you need to know.

Who Needs a Visa?

Almost everyone. Only citizens of Djibouti and Kenya are visa-exempt. Everyone else needs either an e-Visa or a visa on arrival.

e-Visa (Recommended)

Apply online at evisa.gov.et.

Types

  • Single-entry tourist — $52, valid 30 days
  • Single-entry tourist (90-day) — $72, valid 90 days
  • Multi-entry tourist — $82, valid 90 days, multiple entries
  • Business visa — $72, 30 days

Processing Time

Most e-Visas are approved within 3 business days. Some are approved in hours. Apply at least 2 weeks before travel.

  • Digital passport photo
  • Credit/debit card (Visa, Mastercard)
  • Email address

Visa on Arrival

Available at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. $52 for 30 days. Slower but works if you apply last minute. Bring cash USD.

Requirements at the Border

  • Passport (6+ months validity)
  • Printed e-Visa confirmation
  • Return ticket
  • Yellow fever certificate (if coming from affected countries)
  • Proof of accommodation (sometimes asked)

Extensions

You can extend your visa at the Main Immigration Office in Addis Ababa. Cost: ~$100 for 30-day extension. Processing: 1–3 days.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying too late — allow 2 weeks minimum
  • Wrong passport details — double-check everything
  • Photo issues — plain background, no glasses
  • Not printing the visa — some airlines require paper copy

Traveling to Other Regions

Ethiopian visa covers all regions. But some remote areas (Danakil, Omo Valley near borders) require additional permits from regional governments. Your tour operator handles these.
