While tourists crowd Tanzania and Kenya, one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife destinations sits quietly in southwestern Ethiopia — Chebera Churchura National Park.
Where Is Chebera Churchura?
The park covers 1,250 km² in the SNNP Region, about 460 km southwest of Addis Ababa. It's part of the Kaffa Biosphere Reserve and borders the Konta and Dawro zones.

What Makes Chebera Special?
Unlike Ethiopia's more famous parks (Simien, Bale), Chebera Churchura is almost empty of tourists. You can spend an entire day on game drive and see no other vehicles. This is what safari was like 40 years ago.
The park's terrain varies wildly — from open grasslands to dense montane forest to hot springs. The Meka Forest at the park's center is a birder's paradise.
How to Visit
The best access is via Addis Ababa → Jimma → Chebera, roughly 10 hours by road. Most travelers stay at the park's eco-lodge or camp under the stars.
Guided walking safaris are the highlight — tracking elephants on foot with armed rangers, seeing the forest at eye level rather than from a vehicle.
Best Time to Go
The dry season runs November to April. This is when wildlife concentrates around water sources and roads are passable.
Avoid June to September — heavy rains make many trails impassable.
